Q&A: Why Do You Shoot So Dark And Moody?

Every week I will be posting a new Q&A post to answer your questions about boudoir, erotics, my photography and more. If you have a question that you would like to have addressed please feel free to reach out and let me know what’s on your mind!

Why Do You Shoot Boudoir/Erotica In The Dark & Moody Style That You Do?

This is actually a really common question; people are drawn to my work and the way that I shoot this genre in large part because of the way that I work with light and shadow – commonly this style is called “Dark And Moody“. But lot’s of boudoir is very bright, very fluffy, very clean – the subject of those photos looks beautiful, no doubt, but -for me at least- there is something missing there in the ‘sexy’ department.

For me, I think about what are the environments that we are being sexy in like. Chances are the location, be it a club, bar, house party, whatever – chances are that the light was low. In low light we can’t see everything, every detail of that attractive person sitting across the bar is not readily apparent. Our minds fill in blanks where our eyes fail us, and our imaginations take it from there.

The idea of my photography and how I shoot boudoir is very similar. I want to show the viewer enough to get their mind going and to do that I use light and shadow to highlight where I want the viewer’s attention and shadow to obscure what I want hidden. It’s funny because we always consider ‘sexy’ to be a physical thing, and no doubt there is a physical piece to it, but what most overlook is the mental aspect to what we find sexy.

So that is basically the idea behind my style. Its all about playing mind games with the viewer, getting them to wonder about what is happening in the shot that they can’t see; giving them enough information to create the scenario in their mind, but enough left up to interpretation to give the viewers imagination room to run with it.

Hopefully that helps explain a little bit of the thinking behind what I do and how I do it. If you have any other questions please feel free to reach out!
